RCMP constable struck and killed on Vancouver Island

A constable with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police was struck and killed by a motorist in the early morning hours of April 5 during a traffic stop. The crash occurred on Vancouver Island in Langford around 3:30 a.m. The RCMP officer was pronounced dead approximately a half hour later.

Law enforcement officers from the RCMP as well as the Saanich Police Department are still investigating the crash. However the driver of the pick-up truck that hit the RCMP officer was taken into custody. That driver reportedly did not suffer any serious injuries.

Condolences poured in from law enforcement agencies and officials across British Columbia and around the country. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau offered his condolences via Twitter to the constable's family. The 32-year-old victim leaves behind two young children and a husband. Fundraisers are being held to help out the constable's family.

Authorities are still being tight-lipped about any details they may have learned regarding the cause of the crash. It hasn't been confirmed or denied whether the driver of the truck was being pursued by officers when it struck the police cruiser at Peatt Road and Goldstream Avenue. Photos of the crash scene show the badly-damaged cruiser with the driver's side door bashed in and the truck next to it, with the front end damaged.

Whenever a person is injured or killed by a reckless or negligent driver, the victim or surviving family members have the right to seek justice in civil court in addition to any criminal charges that may be filed by the Crown. A civil action can provide compensation for medical care, burial costs, lost wages and other damages.
