Statistics about motor vehicle fatalities in British Columbia

Motor vehicle accidents are the number one cause of unintentional deaths in British Columbia. Each day, about 18 people are hospitalized and 1.2 persons are killed in these types of accidents.

Impaired driving, whether under medications, drugs or alcohol and distracted driving are common risks factors. Each year, these accidents cost the BC healthcare system about $8.8 billion.

The most common contributing factor is a human condition, such as being impaired or extremely fatigued. Next is human action, such as improper passing, failing to signal and driving without due care.

The contributing factors are 26 per cent alcohol impairments, 6 per cent drug impairment and 3 per cent drugs and alcohol combined. These numbers are from 2001 to 2012.

Most of the victims in motor vehicle collisions are car occupants, although many of the injuries happen to motorcyclists, cyclists and pedestrians as well. Each year, there are more than 6,500 hospitalizations due to motor vehicle crashes. That amounts to nearly 40,000 days spent in the hospital.

About 430 people die each year in motor vehicle accidents in British Columbia. The greatest percentage of deaths happen to those who are 15 to 24 years old. This age range makes up more than 20 per cent of all the motor vehicle crash fatalities.
