Important brain injury statistics everyone should know

Brain injuries are the most common reason for disability and death. In Canada, acquired brain injuries are 44 times more prevalent than spinal cord injuries, 400 times more prevalent than HIV/AIDS and 30 times more prevalent than breast cancer.

All that said, on a provincial level, brain injury research receives a lot less funding than the problems listed above. It is important that individuals make themselves aware of how important the issue of traumatic brain injury is if we hope to bring more attention to the condition and research new treatments that can help the people who are suffering from it.

Here are some more important statistics on brain injury:

-- Every three minutes, one person suffers a traumatic brain injury in Canada

-- Five hundred out of every 100,000 people in Canada will suffer from a brain injury annually, which equals 165,000 per year

-- Over 11,000 Canadians die from brain injuries each year

-- In British Columbia, approximately 60 new instances of brain injury are reported every day

-- It's estimated that the acquired brain injury represents an economic burden of over $12.7 billion per year for Canada.

Considering these statistics -- and the fact that one out of every three Canadians is impacted directly or indirectly by brain injury -- British Columbia residents may want to consider what our communities are doing to support people who are dealing with this debilitating condition. British Columbia residents who have suffered a brain injury may also want to consider whether they can pursue a personal injury claim relating to their injuries. This could be a way to obtain money to pay for costly medical care, treatment, disability and in-home services.
