Free hotline set to open for concussion victims

A new toll-free concussion hotline will be launched to service Canadians who may have suffered from this serious and often misunderstood condition. According to the physician who founded the hotline, patients often do not know what causes concussions or how to diagnose and treat them. This hotline offers key information to people during the first critical days following such an accident.

The concussion hotline founder said that concussions are a silent epidemic, but the new toll-free call-in line will feature volunteer neurologists and neurosurgeons who can give information to people suffering from a concussion and their caregivers when they need it most. Sometimes, for example, a child might suffer a concussion on a Friday or Saturday evening, but the parents would not know how to help their children over the weekend, or children might play or participate in sports the day following a concussion.

The primary message the hotline wants to give to concussion victims is "when in doubt, sit it out." This is very often the one piece of advice concussion victims need -- to take rest following the injury and allow their bodies time to recuperate -- but in many cases this common sense advice is ignored. However, this is not the only area of confusion. In many cases, concussions never get diagnosed properly because victims do not know how to identify and/or interpret the most basic symptoms.

Whenever a British Columbia resident suffers a serious fall -- and especially when the fall involves the head striking the ground -- it is a good idea to check with a doctor for signs of a head injury, traumatic brain injury or concussion. If a concussion is present, then the injured person may also want to look into whether any other party might be negligent and/or financially liable for the accident.
