Car accidents: Cyclist hurt in hit-and-run in British Columbia

A 53-year-old man has been seriously hurt in what police are calling a hit-and-run incident. The British Columbia division of the RCMP is tasked with investigating car accidents of this type. They have reached out to the community for support in solving this case and bringing the driver involved to justice.

According to the accident report, the man was cycling in Nanaimo around 3 a.m. during the morning of Nov. 26 when the crash occurred. Witnesses called 911 after finding the man in the street. Unfortunately, he was not able to provide investigators with details of what happened. He was taken to a local hospital with a broken scapula and several lacerations. He is expected to recover.

Police have determined from the damage to the bicycle that he was hit from behind by a motor vehicle. They are still searching for that vehicle and its driver as of this report. The investigation is expected to make use of the Crimestopper tip line for residents who wish to remain anonymous to provide tips to police to help bring a suspect in for questioning.

Once the driver has been found, British Columbia authorities will likely press charges at least for leaving the scene of the crash. Car accidents of this type are typically dealt with harshly by provincial law, which also allows the injured man to file a personal injury suit against the driver and anyone else with ownership interest in the vehicle involved in the crash. These suits are handled in civil court and do not necessarily rely on a criminal charge or conviction to be processed.
