Car accidents: Pedestrian dies in British Columbia

A woman has tragically died after being struck by a car in Chilliwack on the night of Oct. 26, according to police. British Columbia RCMP, who are typically responsible for responding to car accidents, have reported that no charges have been filed against the driver involved in the crash. Their investigation is still underway at this time.

Reports of the accident are incomplete, but it has been confirmed the accident took place on Vedder Road, just south of Highway 1. It is unclear whether the 50-year-old female pedestrian was walking in the street at the time of the accident or whether the vehicle involved left the road to strike her. She was seriously injured and rushed to a local hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

RCMP spokesmen have said that no evidence exists to suggest alcohol or speed were factors in this crash. Police have not stated publicly what they believe may have caused the accident, but they have not ruled out filing charges in this case. They have asked for the support of community members in coming forward with eyewitness reports that might help the ongoing investigation.

Not all car accidents in British Columbia result in criminal charges being filed. This is not to say that the driver was not still, in some way, materially responsible for the crash. The family of the deceased woman is therefore granted the ability to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the driver in civil court. Such suits are not reliant on criminal convictions or even charges, but they do require evidence of material contribution to the accident, which can sometimes be retrieved from police sources.
