Car accidents: Woman dead in British Columbia

A woman in Burnaby tragically lost her life following a crash on the evening of Nov. 7, according to police. British Columbia authorities responsible for car accidents involving pedestrians are still in the process of investigating the particulars of the tragedy. So far, they have not filed charges against the driver involved in the crash.

The details of this accident are extremely limited, but it has been confirmed by authorities that an 18-year-old woman was crossing a street around 6 p.m. when the accident occurred. It is unclear at this time whether the woman was crossing in an approved crosswalk, but sources say she was crossing near an intersection. She was struck by a vehicle and was pronounced dead of her injuries.

The driver involved in the accident reportedly stayed at the scene and cooperated with police during the course of their investigation. Police have not publicly suggested causes for this accident as of this report, but they have not ruled out driver error. Their investigation is still underway at this time.

When car accidents do not have clearly-defined causes, it is up to British Columbia authorities to determine what occurred. If they find the driver involved in this accident contributed materially to the crash, leading to the death of the 18-year-old woman, that driver could face criminal charges. Even if no criminal charges are filed, the family of the deceased woman may choose to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the driver in civil court. Police evidence pointing to material contribution can be useful when filing civil suits.
