Fatal motor vehicle accidents: 1 dead in British Columbia crash

A man is dead after a vehicle struck a group of cyclists, according to local sources. Fatal motor vehicle accidents involving pedestrians or bicyclists often require considerable investigation to determine the cause, which is what British Columbia authorities are in the process of undertaking. So far, the driver involved in the crash has not been charged with a crime.

The accident report states that the 19-year-old driver somehow lost control of his vehicle while travelling along River Road in Richmond around 10:30 a.m. This caused his vehicle to veer into a group of six male cyclists. Of the six, one of the men, a 33-year-old, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

The other five individuals were rushed to local hospitals. A 39-year-old man is listed as being in critical condition, and a 46-year-old is in serious condition. The other three cyclists managed to escape with minor injuries. The 19-year-old driver did not appear to be injured in the crash and reportedly cooperated with police on the scene of the accident.

In cases of fatal motor vehicle accidents, British Columbia authorities often reach out to the community to help determine what happened to cause the crash. Using eyewitness testimony and other investigative techniques, police will determine whether the driver was at fault for the accident. Even if no criminal charges are filed, however, provincial law gives all injured parties and the family of the deceased the right to file personal injury and/or wrongful death lawsuits against the driver, as well as anyone with ownership interest in the vehicle involved in the crash.
