Car accidents: fatal Christmas Eve crash in Surrey

Police are reaching out to Surrey residents following a tragic crash on Christmas Eve that claimed the life of a 32-year-old woman. British Columbia RCMP often asks for the support of witnesses in investigating car accidents with unusual circumstances, and this crash is no exception. They have not charged the driver involved in the crash with a crime at this time.

According to the accident report, the woman was walking on 132nd street around 2:45 p,m. when police say she became "entangled" with a sedan that was traveling on the same road. Witnesses say they saw her fall from the side of the car, but that her injuries did not seem significant. The driver, an unidentified 41-year-old man, reportedly stopped and stayed at the accident scene until authorities arrived. He is apparently cooperating with police.

The woman was taken to a local hospital as a precautionary measure, where she was admitted. She died of her injuries two days later. Medical authorities have yet to release her cause of death. Police are now asking Surrey residents to contact local tip lines if they witnessed the accident and have not yet come forward.

Even in cases of car accidents where British Columbia authorities do not press criminal charges, there may still be legal recourse for the family of the deceased victim under provincial law. The family is likely entitled to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the driver in civil court. Civil claims rely on evidence of negligence or recklessness in order to establish liability in court.
