Fatal motor vehicle accidents: Man dies in British Columbia crash

North Vancouver authorities are still investigating a fatal crash that claimed the life of a 63-year-old man on Jan. 9. British Columbia RCMP, who are typically responsible for investigating fatal motor vehicle accidents, were on the scene shortly after 3:45 p.m. to determine the cause of the collision. They have asked for the support of the public in determining additional details about the tragedy.

Very little has been confirmed as of this writing, but the accident involved three vehicles, including a southbound vehicle driven by the victim. It appears one of the vehicles crossed a median and caused a collision with two other cars before landing in the westbound lanes of the Upper Level Highway. The 63-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene, while other drivers and passengers were taken to hospitals with minor injuries.

Police have not commented publicly on what they believe the cause of the crash to be, but they have announced they are looking into several possibilities. One spokesperson said they are paying attention to the sections of the Criminal Code that pertain to reckless or dangerous driving. With that said, no charges have been filed as of this report.

Fatal motor vehicle accidents are often subject to this level of police scrutiny in order to determine whether one or more drivers contributed materially to the accident. If this is the case here, one or more drivers may be subject to criminal charges. If the deceased man is deemed not materially responsible for the crash, British Columbia law provides for the right of his family to file a wrongful death claim against any driver whose negligence is considered to have contributed to the crash. Such a suit is filed in civil court, regardless of criminal charges or convictions.
