Car accidents: 1 dead following British Columbia accident

A devastating crash in Surrey has left one person dead and police looking for reasons why. The British Columbia detachment of the RCMP, tasked with investigating fatal car accidents, is currently reaching out to potential witnesses to the accident that claimed the life of a 29-year-old driver on Highway 1. So far, they have not filed charges against the surviving driver.

The accident report is still being compiled, but it is currently known that an individual driving a pickup truck eastbound on Highway 1 crossed the center line and entered westbound traffic. The result was a head-on collision with a westbound SUV driven by the victim. The SUV driver was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

The pickup truck driver was taken to a local hospital with injuries whose severity was not reported. Accident reconstruction teams were working at the location of the crash, and RCMP officers closed down the highway for most of the day. Their investigation has yet to be concluded.

In car accidents involving more than one vehicle, it is often the case that one or both drivers may have committed an error that led to the collision. It is the responsibility of British Columbia authorities to come up with a comprehensive accident reconstruction that details which driver(s) contributed materially to the accident to determine whether criminal charges are appropriate. In this case, even if the pickup truck driver is not charged criminally, the family of the deceased driver is entitled under provincial law to file a wrongful death suit against him in civil court.
