Students get a taste of drunk driving car accidents

Drunk driving accidents have caused catastrophic injuries to many teenagers in British Columbia -- and also claimed the lives of many. The grade 10s of a central British Columbia school were recently given a taste of the life that can follow such an accident. The event was organised by the Prevent Alcohol & Risk-Related Trauma in Youth (P.A.R.T.Y.) Program. Car accidents involving teens in small communities tend to traumatise all the residents, and this demonstration included almost as many volunteers as students.

Kids were given the opportunity to listen to one of their peers describe his life after being involved in a drunk driving accident. He compared his current life of living with a permanent disability with his carefree life before the fateful crash. After that, a brain injury victim spoke to the students, and they could have hands-on experiences that showed them the potential consequences of brain injuries. The stations they could visit included a section at which they could experience relearning to write along with a vision impairment and sensation station.

Later that day, a mock accident scene showed students the horrors of a drunk driving crash. There was also a scene set up to resemble an emergency room, and the typical medical procedures were explained. This was followed by a description of the steps a coroner would take after a fatal drunk driving accident.

The aim of mock accident scenes such as this one is to encourage teenagers to avoid drinking and driving. Along with the emotional and physical damage that follows such car accidents come the financial consequences. Victims of accidents that were caused by negligence such as drunk driving can seek the help of a British Columbia personal injury lawyer to assist with seeking recovery of financial damages in a civil lawsuit.
