Car accidents involving cyclists increase over summer months

Every day, pedestrians, cyclists, and motor-vehicles share the roads. In order for everyone to stay safe, there are certain rules that each must follow in British Columbia. Car accidents involving pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcycles can be particularly dangerous, so it is important for any driver to be aware of how to safely share the road with everyone.

Warmer weather brings an increase in cyclists to British Columbia streets. Unfortunately, it also brings an increase in car accidents involving those riding bicycles. As a result, the Insurance Corporation of British Coumbia (ICBC) is urging drivers to take extra precautions to avoid a crash over the summer and autumn months.

An average of 740 cyclists are killed in collisions between June and September every year. This is an average of six cyclists per day in the warmer months. The Southern Interior of the province faces the highest rates with an average of 160 injuries and three deaths for cyclists every day over the summer. The ICBC says these statistics exemplify the importance of drivers staying aware as they share the road in the summer.

There are a few ways to avoid car accidents like these. The first is to remove distractions, such as cell phones, behind the wheel. Making eye contact with cyclists and signalling well in advance can ensure proper communication. Drivers should also look out for cyclists before opening their doors or pulling out of parking spaces. Cyclists can also stay safe by following the rules of the road and wearing reflective clothing.

Driving safely is important any time of year. However, with the increase of cyclists in the summer, lack of awareness on the road can have even starker consequences. Those who have been injured in British Columbia car accidents and their families can benefit from the advice of a lawyer following the incident.
