Litigator

Linley Welwood LLP, a reputable law firm, is seeking a skilled and experienced Litigator to join our dynamic team in Abbotsford, BC. We pride ourselves on providing top-notch legal services to our clients and offer a collaborative and supportive work environment for our employees to thrive.

We are seeking a talented and motivated Commercial Litigator with 5+ years of experience to handle a diverse workload. The ideal candidates will have a strong background in general litigation and construction law, excellent advocacy skills and a proven track record of success in representing clients in complex litigation matters.

Qualifications:

  • J.D. from an accredited law school
  • Active member in good standing of the Law Society of British Columbia
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to think strategically
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven track record of achieving successful outcomes for clients

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage a workload of commercial construction litigation matters from inception to resolution
  • Conduct legal research, analysis and drafting of pleadings, motions, briefs, and other legal documents.
  • Represent clients in mediations, arbitrations, and court proceedings
  • Provide strategic legal advice and counsel to clients on various construction law issues, including contract disputes, payment disputes, and construction defects.
  • Collaborate with partners, associates, and support staff to efficiently handle client matters and achieve successful outcomes
  • Stay current with developments in construction law and litigation practices to ensure the highest level of representation for clients.

Construction Law Legal Assistant

To provide support to lawyers and legal staff by managing the day-to-day operations and administrative duties of the litigation department.

Qualifications:

  • LAA certificate & minimum 5 years’ related experience
  • Strong interpersonal skills that allow one to work effectively in a diverse environment
  • High level of integrity and work ethic
  • Maintain a professional appearance, demeanor and attitude at all times
  • Maintain and model appropriate personal boundaries with clients
  • Maintain and ensure confidentiality with all client and departmental files
  • Use effective interpersonal skills to communicate complex and sensitive information
  • Create and/or maintain construction law precedents

Key Responsibilities:

  • File management: organize files, paper, data, receive documents, file documents and vital records and maintain all files in accordance with Linley Welwood’s policy and procedures
  • Draft legal correspondence and perform general file duties such as: prepare and file pleadings, court applications, trial briefs, and NOC’s
  • Schedule trial dates, mediations etc.
  • Manage and move files forward with minimal input from lawyer
  • Review and summarize factual materials
  • Maintain lawyer calendar, file calendar including BF & limitation dates
  • Record time for all files including work such as drafting, legal research, client communications and any other work as directed by the responsible lawyer on the file
  • Prepare monthly WIP reports for lawyers
  • Prepare monthly time billing for lawyers and client invoices (using Clio)
  • Processing all inbound and outbound mail and e-mails

Junior Legal Administrative Assistant – Litigation

Our busy Litigation department is looking for a highly motivated junior Legal Administration Assistant with experience in litigation. As the successful candidate you will be responsible for a variety of duties pertaining to the role and providing direct support to one Partner and Senior Paralegal.

Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of experience as a Legal Assistant or Paralegal
  • Must have strong client service skills
  • Excellent attention to details and proofreading skills
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
  • Must be highly organized, detail-oriented and able to multi-task & prioritize

Key Responsibilities:

  • Act as the first point of contact for client inquiries as well as maintaining client contact.
  • General administrative duties.
  • Draft, review, and prepare routine correspondence, legal documents, court pleadings, and reporting letters.
  • BC Online & Land Title searches, and the filing of pleadings via BC Online.
  • Invoice preparation-creating, scanning, and delivering of same.
  • Preparation of application records, book of authorities, etc. for court.
  • Maintain established systems within the firm such as calendars, client files, and BF systems.
  • Assists with scheduling appointments and other dates for/with clients, lawyers and court.
  • Familiarity with BC Supreme Court Civil Rules and BC Supreme Court litigation procedures.

Benefits:

  • $45,000 – $55,000 annual salary, based on skill and experience.
